De Britse krant The Financial Times kende de voorstelling vijf sterren toe: 'You could almost hear the sighs of satisfaction and relief rippling round Avignon's medieval Palace of the Popes as this production unfolded: historical substance with overt contemporary echoes, interesting structure, a sterling cast, innovative scenography and rich choral polyphony'. Een theatercriticus schreef in De Standaard: 'Lanoyes tekst fonkelt en knettert als de brandstapel van Jeanne d'Arc'.
Deze Toneelhuisproductie is de vrucht van de samenwerking tussen Tom Lanoye en regisseur Guy Cassiers. Uitgeverij Actes Sud publiceerde met de steun van het VFL de Franse vertaling van 'Bloed en Rozen', tezamen met 'Mama Medea', een vrije en hedendaagse bewerking van de mythe van Medea. Alain van Crugten vertaalde beide stukken.
