Moeyaert and van Ranst nominated for Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis

Five Dutch-language authors are nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis. Amongst them the Flemish Bart Moeyaert and Do van Ranst. The German Youth Literature Prize is anually awarded to German-language books in four categories: an illustrated book, a children's book, a young adult novel and a non-fiction book. An additional prize is awarded by the German children's and youth jury.

Bart Moeyaert's nominated for ‘Mut für drei', the German translation of ‘Durf voor drie' (Querido). The book consists of three of his previously published short stories. It is the fourth nomination for Moeyaert, who was in the running in previous years with ‘Voor altijd, altijd' and ‘Kus me'. He won the prize once, for ‘Blote handen'.

Do van Ranst is a contender with ‘Rabenhaar', the translation of ‘Ravenhaar (Davidsfonds/Infodok). The book describes how children say farewell to their childhood by playing a game for the last time - the game makes them reflect on themselves and other people. Van Ranst too is a previous winner of the prize, in 2007 for the translation of ‘Mijn vader zegt dat wij levens redden' (My father says we're saving lives).

 

The winners will be announced on 16 November 2009 during the Frankfurter Buchmesse.
