Successful launch comic artists in Angoulême

During the 36th edition of the comic festival in Angoulême the international crowd was captivated by Flemish comic art. Result: plenty of media attention, high sales numbers, contract negotiations with foreign publishing houses and hence ecstatic authors.

The Flemish Literature Fund went all the way. Even the authors got involved. They took part in signing sessions, interviews, drawing concerts and they presented their work to foreign publishers.

Pieter De Poortere in AngoulêmeFor many festival visitors the exhibition ‘Ceci n’est pas la BD flamande’ in the prestigious courtyard of the town hall was a first introduction to the Flemish presence. The artistic exhibition showcased the diversity of graphic styles, themes and esthetic choices of twenty independent-minded artists. Each of them exhibited his/her creative world in a three-dimensional translation. The daring result was well-frequented and well-received by the French press as well as through the festival’s website (www.bdangouleme.com).

Another highlight was the drawing duel between Nix and Johan De Moor set against music scores by Ostend singer-songwriter Arno. Belgian beer flowed richly at the Flemish party that was attended by organisers, publishers and authors.
