2011 Book Lion and Book Peacock awards assigned

The Book Lion (Boekenleeuw) and Book Peacock (Boekenpauw) awards have been assigned. Boek.be, the association of Flemish book publishers, importers and sellers award these prizes annually for the best written and most beautifully illustrated children's and youth books. The prizes were awarded on Wednesday 23 February.


Boekenleeuw en Boekenpauw 2011Jean-Claude van Rijckeghem and Pat van Beirs were awarded the Book Lion Award 2011, the prize for the best written children's and youth books, for their youth novel Gallows Maid (Galgenmeid, Manteau). The writing pair will divide the first prize of 2.500 Euro and receives a gold pin.

 

Four authors were awarded a Book Cup Award (Boekenwelp), an honourable mention with a silver pin:

 

  • Michael De Cock, 'Rosie and Moussa' (Rosie and Moussa, Querido, ill. Judith Vanistendael)
  • Evelien De Vlieger, 'Job and the Pigeon' (Job en de duif, Lannoo, ill. Noëlle Smit)
  • Klaas Verplancke, 'Apple Sauce' (Appelmoes, De Eenhoorn)
  • Bernadette Custers for her translation of 'Tonje Glimmerdal' by Maria Parr (Tonje en de geheime brief, Lannoo)

 

The Book Peacock Award 2011 (Boekenpauw), the prize for the most beautifully illustrated children's and youth books, was awarded to illustrator Ellen Vrijsen for Cantecleer (Cantecleir, De Eenhoorn, text Jo Roets and Geert Vissers). The illustrator receives the first prize of 2.500 Euro and a gold pin.

 

Two illustrators were awarded a Book Feathers Award (Boekenpluim), an honourable mention with a silver pin:

 

  • Elsje Dezwarte, 'Indoorcat Outdoors' (Binnenpoes buiten, De Eenhoorn, text Hilde Vandermeeren)
  • Vanessa Verstappen, 'Amandus the Umpteenth' (Amandus de zoveelste, Lannoo, text Dimitri Leue)

 

On Wednesday 23 February, in the run-up to the Boekenbeesten campaign and Flemish Youth Book Week, the prizes were awarded in the De Groene Waterman bookshop in Antwerp.
