Graphic novelist Brecht Evens honoured in Angoulême

At the International Comic Festival in Angoulême, Flemish graphic novelist Brecht Evens has won the Prix de l'Audace, with 'Les noceurs' (Actes Sud), the French translation of Ergens waar je niet wil zijn (The wrong place, Oogachtend). The 38th edition of the festival therefore ended with a climax for the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF), which has been hard at work promoting its graphic novelists for several years now.

In 2009, Flanders was the host country for Europe's biggest comic festival. It was not long before everyone was talking about the work of young Brecht Evens, one of the twenty graphic novelists the FLF presented at the central exhibition "Ceci n'est pas la BD flamande".

Two years later, Evens' latest and best-received book Ergens waar je niet wil zijn has been translated into French (Actes Sud), English (Drawn and Quarterly) and German (Reprodukt) and contracts have been signed for translations into Spanish (Sins Entido), Italian (Comma 22) and Korean (Open Books).

The Prix de l' Audace is awarded for an experimental graphic novel with plenty of guts. Olivier Schrauwen was also nominated for prestigious awards in Angoulême, with the French translation of his 'De man die zijn baard liet groeien', but he was nog among the prize-winners.
