Andreas Ecke received the prize for 'Oben ist es still' (Suhrkamp, 2008), the translation of 'Boven is het stil' by Gerbrand Bakker. He will receive a monetary prize of 5.200 euros, the award was handed out in Berlin.
Andreas Ecke has been translating Dutch literature, poetry, essays and non-fiction since 2001. He also translated the magnus opus by Geert Mak, 'In Europa'. In ten years time he has built up a large translatory imperium, with titles by Otto de Kat, Cees Nooteboom, P.F.Thomése and Henk Van woerden.
The Else Otten Übersetzerpreis was called to life in 1999 by the Dutch Foundation for literature and the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin. It is funded by the DFL and the FLF.
Else Otten (1873-1931) was one of the most active literary translators, from Dutch into German, of the past century. She translated 'Majesty' by Louis Couperus ('Majestät', 1895) and literary work by Frederik van Eeden, Justus van Maurik and Herman Heijermans.
