Dutch awards for Flemish children's book writers and illustrators

The Dutch Griffel and Penseel prizes are awarded to the best books of the year and presented during Dutch Children's Book Week in October

The Griffel jury awards Zilveren Griffel (Silver Slate Pencil) prizes to ten authors of children's books every year. This year's selection consisted solely of books originally written in the Dutch language. On 5 October, one of the ten nominated books will receive the Gouden Griffel (Golden Slate Pencil), the prize for the best children's book of the year.

Gerda Dendooven was the only Flemish author to win a Zilveren Griffel, for her book ‘Hoe het varken aan zijn krulstaart kwam' (How the Pig Got Its Curly Tail).

This year's Zilveren Penseel (Silver Paintbrush) awards have gone to two Flemish illustrators. Carll Cneut received the award for ‘Fluit zoals je bent' (Whistle As You Are), a collection of poetry compiled by Edward van de Vendel. Geert Vervaeke's illustrations for ‘Een wel heel bijzondere kerst' (A Very Special Christmas Indeed), written by Kristien In-‘t-Ven, also received a Zilveren Penseel. The 2010 Gouden Penseel (Golden Paintbrush) for the best illustrated book went to ‘De boomhut' (The Treehouse) by Dutch duo Marije and Ronald Tolman.

In addition to the Griffel and Penseel prizes, the jury also awards honourable mentions. Flemish author Sylvia Vanden Heede won a Vlag en Wimpel from the Griffel jury for her book ‘Wolf en Hond' (Wolf and Dog).
