The Phares du Nord Award is a two-yearly prize for the best French translation of a prominent Dutch-language title. The prize is instituted by the Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature (NLPVF) and the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF). Literally, the name of the award means ‘Lighthouses of the North'. This is the name under which both NLPVF and FLF presented themselves as guests-of-honour at the Salon du Livre in Paris in 2003. The winner of the Phares du Nord Award receives 5.000 euro. The first winner was Philippe Noble, in 2005, and the second was Annie Kroon, in 2007.
Anita Concas (1932, Ben-Arous, Tunisia) has been residing in the Netherlands since 1957. From 1963 to 1991, she respectively taught at the Institute for Translation and the Institute for Translation Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. Aside from works by Kader Abdolah, Concas has translated books from amongst others H.M. van den Brink, Karel Glastra van Loon, Arnon Grunberg, Marek van der Jagt, Oek de Jong and Harry Mulisch.
The Prix des Phares du Nord 2009 award ceremony will take place in Paris on 29 January 2010.
