‘A Literary History of the Low Countries' is an adaptation of ‘Histoire de la littérature néerlandaise', which was published ten years ago. The French reference book has been thoroughly edited, updated and enriched with many illustrations and maps. Complete with a list of all English translations of Dutch-language literature and an exhaustive register, this book is the standard for the coming decades. In Germany, a history of Dutch-language literature appeared in 2006 (‘Niederländische Literaturgeschichte', J.B. Metzler, Stuttgart/Weimar). An Italian one is in the works.
The publication of the book underlines a strong foreign interest in Dutch-language literature. The works of many Flemish and Dutch writers were translated successfully, from Turkey to the US. Hence, interest has grown in the literary tradition which lies at these authors' roots. ‘A Literary History of the Low Countries' meets this need as it paints an accurate picture of the vibrant literary culture in the Low Countries.
‘A Literary History of the Low Countries' was published with financial support from the Flemish Literature Fund, the Dutch Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature (NLPVF), the Nederlandse Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
