The Vondel Translation Prize is awarded yearly to the best English or American translation of an important Dutch-language literary or cultural-historical book. The award was founded by the Society of Authors and is funded by the Dutch Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature (NLPVF) and the Flemish Literature Fund.
Sam Garrett (1956) is an American who lives and works between Amsterdam and the French Pyrenees. He is the English translator of among others Arnon Grunberg, Lieve Joris, Tim Krabbé, Geert Mak and Frank Westerman. Garrett previously won the Vondel Translation Prize in 2003 for his translation of ‘De renner' (‘The runner') by Tim Krabbé.
The jury of the Vondel Translation Prize 2009 consisted of English literary critic Paul Binding and two previous winners of the prize: Susan Massotty and Ina Rilke.
