‘The Angel Maker' tells the intriguing story of Doctor Victor Hoppe whose main motivation in life is to clone. The novel has won the Gouden Uil Prijs van de Lezer (Golden Owl Readers' Award), the five-yearly prize for fiction and was nominated for both the Libris and AKO Literature Prizes. It was translated into English by Hester Velmans.
The longlist consists of 156 books and features other Dutch-language writers alongside Stefan Brijs: Gerbrand Bakker, Arnon Grunberg and Simone van der Vlugt. The most famous names on the list are Paul Auster, Philip Roth, Salman Rushdie together with Nobel Prize winners Toni Morrison and José Saramago.
In recent years, several Flemish and Dutch novelists were nominated for the IMPAC Award. Paul Verhaeghen made the list last year with his own translation of ‘Omega Minor'. Anne Provoost, Maarten 't Hart and Marek van der Jagt were selected in 2006. In 2005, the longlist included novels by Peter Verhelst, Erwin Mortier, Harry Mulisch, Anna Enquist and Arnon Grunberg. Grunberg even made the shortlist. For Mortier it was his second nomination as his debut ‘Marcel' was nominated in 2003.
The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award is worth 100.000 euro. The jury picks a shortlist by 14 April, the final winner is to be announced on 17 June.
