Annelies Verbeke nominated for BNG New Literature Prize

Annelies Verbeke made the shortlist of the BNG Nieuwe Literatuur Prijs (BNG New Literature Prize). The Flemish author is nominated for her recent novel ‘Vissen Redden' (Saving fish), a story about heartache. The main character is depressed and decides to break with the past when her boyfriend leaves her. In an attempt to fight her sorrow, she engages in the battle against overfishing.

Also on the shortlist are: Mark Boog and ‘Ik begrijp de moordenaar' (I understand the murderer), Jan van Mersbergen and ‘Zo begint het' (And so it begins), Henk van Straten and ‘Smet' (Stain), Carolina Trujillo and ‘De terugkeer van Lupe García' (The return of Lupe García), Robbert Welagen and ‘Verre vrienden' (Distant friends). The prize, which is worth 15.000 euro, will be awarded on 5 February 2010 in Amsterdam.

 

The BNG New Literature Prize is a relatively new prize awarded to authors under 40 years old who have not yet fully broken through. Former winners include Esther Gerritsen, Yves Petry, Sanneke van Hassel and Rachida Lamrabet.
