Two Paris exhibitions for Tom Schamp

From May, Flemish illustrator Tom Schamp will be exhibiting his work at two venues in Paris. The 'Urban' exhibition is showing 60 works inspired by the city and its surroundings, which Tom produced while he was working in advertising. In 'Toutes les îles aux trésors' ['All the Treasure Islands'] you can see the originals from the picture book 'Het heerlijke eiland van Koning Torelore' ['The Wonderful Island of King Torelore'].

From 13 until 17 February 2012, the FLF invited eight foreign publishers to Flanders to discover the flourishing world of Flemish children's and youth literature during the third Publishers tour. The FLF offered them a cultural and (re)creative program of a midweek in Flanders. The publishers – from Sweden, Turkey, France, Spain, Germany, China, the United Kingdom and New Zealand – received guided literary tours in Antwerp and Ghent, met authors, illustrators, specialists, scientists, publishers, book organisations, …
Four Flemish illustrators on the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Ruth van Wichelen, a young and very promising illustrator, has been awarded a travel grant to visit the Bologna Children's Book Fair by the Flemish Literature Fund. The grant also comes with a mentorship: experienced illustrator Geert Vervaeke will join Ruth in Bologna and help her not only to find her way in the maze of publishers and international contacts, but also – and mainly – to get to know the work of other illustrators. 'It is important to be able to see my work in relation to that of others,' Ruth says. 'In this respect Bologna could be a turning point for me. Will I be able to find my place in the world of illustration?'
Lod Lavkiprize 2011 for Els Beerten

The five-yearly Lod Lavkiprize 2011 for the best Flemish youth book from the period 2005-2010 is awarded to Els Beerten for her novel 'Allemaal willen de hemel' [We All Want Heaven] (Querido). The jury nominated 15 of the 102 submitted books. The prize is worth 2,500 euro.

The book 'The duif die niet kon duiken' [The Pigeon That Could Not Dive] by Edward van de Vendel (text) and Alain Verster (illustrations) was given a place in the February Bestseller List of Deutschlandfunk.
Jan de Leeuw nominated for the Jugendliteraturpreis

Jan de Leeuw's Bevroren kamers (Frozen Rooms) has been nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis 2011. Rolf Erdorf translated the title as Schrödinger, Dr. Linda und eine Leiche im Kühlhaus. De Leeuw won praise from the jury for his style, which was described as 'light hearted and, at the same time, tragicomic'. Also, 'The reader experiences the chaotic feelings of mourning, caring, amorousness and despair from inside as well as from a distance: a complete panoramic view'.
Eight illustrators selected for the 23rd International Biennial of children's book illustrations

Bologna a home from home for the FLF again this year

For the fifth time in succession, the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) will be flying the banner at the international children's book fair in Bologna (28 – 31 March). We have fixed appointments with more than 60 foreign publishers at the joint Flemish stand. But there is more: the FLF is spotlighting three recent titles, illustrators Stefanie De Graef and Tom Schamp will be travelling with us and Carll Cneut is on the jury for the prestigious illustrators' exhibition.
2011 Book Lion and Book Peacock awards assigned

The Book Lion (Boekenleeuw) and Book Peacock (Boekenpauw) awards have been assigned. Boek.be, the association of Flemish book publishers, importers and sellers award these prizes annually for the best written and most beautifully illustrated children's and youth books. The prizes were awarded on Wednesday 23 February.
