Translation grants

The Flemish Literature Fund awards subsidies to foreign publishers and magazines who wish to publish translated literary work by a Flemish author. In evaluating a project the FLF considers the literary quality of the book, the status of the publisher and the quality of the translation.

The following genres qualify for support: prose, poetry, creative nonfiction and children's and youth literature. Specific grant regulations apply for drama, graphic novels and picture books.

Translation grants should enable the publisher to pay the translator a reasonable fee. Therefore, a contract with a translator and proof of payment are preconditions.

Translation grants will amount to 60% of the translator's fee. In cases of classic works and poetry, translation grants may cover the entire translation cost.

As the quality of the translation is of extreme importance, the FLF and its colleagues of the Dutch Foundation for Literature compile lists of accredited literary translators. If a publisher prefers to work with another literary translator, the quality of the translator's work is assessed first.
