Illustrator Carll Cneut inspires British children

Carll Cneut (c) VFL_bericht.jpg Carll Cneut, one of the most successful illustrators in Flanders, is an important guest at The Children's Bookshow, an annual tour of children's authors and illustrators through the UK. Cneut is one of twelve artists who want to inspire school children with their passion for 'Stories from around the world', this year's central theme.

Dutch awards for Flemish children's book writers and illustrators

The Dutch Griffel and Penseel prizes are awarded to the best books of the year and presented during Dutch Children's Book Week in October

 

The Griffel jury awards Zilveren Griffel (Silver Slate Pencil) prizes to ten authors of children's books every year. This year's selection consisted solely of books originally written in the Dutch language. On 5 October, one of the ten nominated books will receive the Gouden Griffel (Golden Slate Pencil), the prize for the best children's book of the year.

Pieter Gaudesaboos wins Plantin Moretus Readers' Choice Award

The yearly Plantin Moretus Prizes award the best designed books in several categories. Flemish illustrator and graphic designer Pieter Gaudesaboos received the readers' choice award for his cover design of ‘Het boek van Mannetje Koek' (Mister Cookie's book).

New book by young Flemish illustrator ‘big discovery of the fair' for many publishers

The Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) participated actively in the International Children's Book Fair in Bologna for the fourth time this year, promoting Flemish books for children and young adults through meetings with 60 contacts, mainly publishers, from other countries. This year, for the first time, a team of two illustrators received FLF-funding to attend the fair: Kaatje Vermeire, a young illustrator, and the experienced artist Carll Cneut. The thinking behind this visit was that the experience and results gained from years of working with foreign publishers should be passed on to the younger generation.

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Belgian author and illustrator

Kitty Crowther wint Astrid Lindgren Award.jpg Belgian author and illustrator Kitty Crowther has won the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, one of the most important and prestigious international prizes for literature for children and young adults. The prize recognises the work of writers, illustrators, storytellers and organisations that promote reading. Its aim is to increase worldwide interest in literature for children and young people. The winner of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award receives a cash prize of five million Swedish kronor, over 500,000 euros.

Carll Cneut nominated for two prestigious international awards

Five authors and five illustrators, selected from 55 international candidates, are in with a chance of winning the Hans Christian Andersen Award. Illustrator Carll Cneut is the only nominee from Flanders on the shortlist and he could become the first Belgian to win the prize. Belgians Bart Moeyaert and Klaas Verplancke have been nominated on previous occasions. Dutch nominees Annie M.G. Schmidt and Max Velthuijs both went on to win the award.

FLF ready to inspire at Bologna Children's Book Fair

cover Inspiring historical novels from Flanders_postzegel.jpg This year, the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) will once again be present at the international children's book fair of Bologna, from 22 to 26 March. The FLF heads to Italy with a full schedule of meetings with foreign publishers, and it takes along two illustrators on its journey. Furthermore, there's the new catalogue ‘Dutch en Flemish Inspiration', which will be presented at the fair.

Festive launch of four Flemish picture books in India

The FLF is proud that the first translations of Flemish picture books in India have been launched successfully!

 

Four books were translated into Hindi: ‘Rikki' by Guido Van Genechten, ‘Slaap lekker, Rosalie' (Sweet dreams, Rosalie) by Brigitte Minne and An Candaele, ‘Vogeltjelief' (Sweet birdie) by Kristien Aertssen and ‘Willy' by Geert De Kockere and Carll Cneut.

From 22 to 26 February 2010, the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) received nine prominent foreign publishers of children's and youth literature. The FLF organized its second publishers tour during which it treated its guests to a journey through the fascinating world of Flemish children's and youth literature.

Kathleen Vereecken and André Sollie win Book Lion and Book Peacock Awards 2010

On 24 February, the winners of the awards for best author and best illustrator of children's and youth books were announced.

 

The Boekenleeuw (Book Lion) 2010 goes to author Kathleen Vereecken for her youth novel ‘Ik denk dat het liefde was' (I think it was love, Lannoo). Vereecken's novel tells the gripping story of Leon, supposedly the son of famous writer and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
