Flemish graphic novelists make a splash at Angoulême

The Flemish representation at the 39th edition of the international comic festival in Angoulême made more of a splash than ever. Like last year, authors Brecht Evens and Olivier Schrauwen were nominated for prestigious prizes, the annual Flemish Party was a resounding success and the Flemish were everywhere in the French press. The Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) looks back at a successful festival.

Paris gets its first Flemish comic wall

On 11 July 2011, the Flemish Representation's courtyard at 6, rue Euler, Paris, was adorned with a comic wall entitled La Flandre met Paris en bulles (Flanders fills Paris with bubbles). Nic Vandermarliere, representative of the Flemish government in France, and Luc Fabry, economic and commercial attaché to the Flemish Region, are enthusiastic about the project and demonstrate a durable dedication to supporting comic strips in France in the future.

Wanted: 10 new graphic short stories for Brussels

The literary organisation Het beschrijf will commission 10 comic strip artists to create and publish a graphic short story on contemporary Brussels. Publication, financial support and accomodation in Europe's capital will be offered.

Brecht Evens nominated for prestigious Eisner Award

Flemish graphic novelist Brecht Evens has been nominated for an Eisner award, the highest distinction in the world of cartoons and graphic novels. With 'The Wrong Place', the English translation of 'Ergens waar je niet wil zijn', Evens is up for the category of 'best painter/multimedia artist (interior art)'. The winners will be announced in July. Last year, Willy Linthout was also nominated in two categories for 'Years of the Elephant'.

Ephameron on the wall on Coney Island

The versatility of graphic designer, illustrator an artist Ephameron was already demonstrated last year when her graphic novel 'Weg' was published. The book, created in collaboration with Pieter van Oudheusden, was presented at the University of Antwerp in an ideal setting: before a wall painting by Ephameron, which will stay in place for a year.

Brecht Evens tours the world with ‘The Wrong Place’

In April, Brecht Evens is travelling to New York and in May to Toronto to promote the English translations of 'Ergens waar je niet wil zijn' ('The Wrong Place', Drawn & Quarterly) and 'Nachtdieren' ('Night Animals', Top Shelf).  Things are moving quickly for the young Flemish graphic novelist, especially since he won the 'Prix de l'Audace' in January at the International Comic Festival in Angoulême.

Comic and graphic novel exhibition at Italian festival

'Ceci n'est pas la BD flamande' is travelling further within Europe. In early 2009, the original exhibition charmed visitors to the Angoulême International Comic Festival. At the Haarlem Comic Festival in 2010, an impressive spin-off premiered, which also stopped off in Cuba. From 29 April to 1 May, the exhibition will be hosted at the Comicon Festival in Naples.

At the International Comic Festival in Angoulême, Flemish graphic novelist Brecht Evens has won the Prix de l'Audace, with 'Les noceurs' (Actes Sud), the French translation of Ergens waar je niet wil zijn (The wrong place, Oogachtend). The 38th edition of the festival therefore ended with a climax for the Flemish Literature Fund (FLF), which has been hard at work promoting its graphic novelists for several years now.

The Flemish Literature Fund (FLF) has commissioned graphic novelist Pieter de Poortere to design an image for a comic wall in Paris. This is an initiative of the Representation of the Flemish Government in France. The wall will be unveiled in the Flemish Representation's courtyard during a Flemish festival on 11 July 2011.

Angoulême pays tribute to Flemish comics

Just like in 2009, the Flemish Literature fund (FLF) continues to pay attention to the success of Flemish comic novels at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême. The Flemish comic book will receive a prominent place from January 27 till January 30 20111 in the French capital of comic strips.
